Department of Planning & Zoning to Host Public Workshops as Part of Community Planning Effort

Howard County’s Department of Planning and Zoning (DPZ) will host two interactive workshops in October to gather public input as part of a new community planning initiative for the Southeastern portion of the county.  The workshops will cover themes highlighted in the County’s General plan such as economic development, transportation, human services and environmental sustainability; the primary focus will be on issues specific to communities in North Laurel and Savage.

The workshops are designed to engage participants and give county planners an opportunity to document specific problems or concerns expressed by residents and business owners.  Information gathered at the workshops will be used to develop Howard County’s first Small Area Plan, something called for in the County’s recently adopted General Plan.

“A Small Area Plan will help guide strategic actions and apply more precise solutions,” said Marsha McLaughlin, Director of the Department of Planning and Zoning.  “The goal is to enlist residents and stakeholders as we develop those solutions.”

The two public workshops are scheduled for:

  • Thursday, October 25, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., North Laurel Community Center, 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road, Laurel
  • Tuesday, October 30,  7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Carroll Baldwin Hall, 9035 Baltimore Street, Savage
